17.07.2020 08:14

2020 is a very special year for Germany and its role in Europe since after 13 years, once again it holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Back in 2007 the European Week of Sport (EWoS) did not exist, making this Presidency more special in the field of sport and physical activity and giving Germany the possibility to host the flagship event of the official opening of week.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the opening on 23 September will take place as a small-scale event in in the iconic Alte Oper of Frankfurt and will be streamed live worldwide for everyone interested to follow. The event will combine a show performance and official greetings from German and European authorities, including the Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Minister of the Interior, Building and Community, Mr. Stephan Mayer, and possibly the EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Ms. Mariya Gabriel.

The European Week of Sport 2020 in Germany includes an online programme through the “BeActive TV” with everyday livestreaming of sports and physical activities sessions. Viewers all over Europe can join the event from the 23rd to the 30th of September. On the 24th, the Presidency Conference “Partnerships for Physical Activity and Sport – Be(come) Active” will take place online, with the participation of academic researchers and practitioners of the field from all over Europe.
